Tips to remember when talking to tech support

For people who call for computer tech support on Long Island without being prepared, the experience can be unpleasant to say the least; however, solving a problem does not have to be that hard. Following a few tips can make the experience less painful.

Be prepared:

This sounds like the motto of the Boy Scouts but it is true. Before you even think of picking up the phone, be prepared to talk intelligently about your problem. The better prepared you are, the less stressful the experience and the quicker the problem will be solved. Here are a few things to consider;

  • What is the error message if there is one?
  • If the computer is not displaying an error message, what exactly is the computer doing?
  • How long has the computer been doing what it’s doing?
  • Were there multiple events at the same time; was there perhaps a virus warning?
  • Have you attempted to fix the problem, if so what have you done so far?

Write down the answers to these types of questions that you ask yourself because the tech support people will ask the same thing.

Be clear:

When you are dealing with computer tech support on Long Island the object is to communicate; you tell them what is happening and then tell you what to do to fix it. In this day and age many tech support groups are located off shore, to eliminate confusion, talk slowly and distinctly, also, call from where it is quiet, a screaming child will not help with the communications.

Be specific and thorough:

Remember one thing, you know what your computer is doing or not doing, the tech support person does not. Tell the story in detail, as much detail as you can. Simply stating that your computer does not work is not good enough; you have to explain what exactly is going on. If your computer is not working because it won’t turn on when you push the power switch, this is information that helps.

Don’t get upset, stay calm:

Getting emotional and frustrated never solved a problem and never will. Bear in mind that computer tech support on Long Island did not design your system, they are there to help you based on the information they have been provided by the manufacturer.

Handling a call to tech support in a cool, calm, calculated manner can help get the problem solved quickly and efficiently.
