Chronic pain is the number one cause of disability in America. More pharmaceuticals are formulated for chronic pain than for many other health conditions. An Olney chiropractor treats almost more chronic pain than other injuries, although it’s close. For those that aren’t sure how a chiropractor can help heal chronic pain, we thought we’d explain.
Anatomy
The spine is a stack of bones between which rest cushions called discs. Inside this stack runs the nervous system. Around the spinal column are muscles, ligaments, and tendons. These support the spine and facilitate movement.
Injury
We don’t have to crash a car or fall off a horse to injure the spine. Sometimes all it takes is working out too zealously or picking up something heavy the wrong way. However we injure the spine, the stack of bones comes out of alignment. This forces the ligaments and tendons to tighten up to protect the spine. The muscles tense up to keep further injury from happening. This means pain. It becomes chronic when nothing can stop the pain for long.
Pain Relief
As you can see, getting the spine back into perfect alignment is the goal. Your Olney chiropractor will use physical adjustments, maybe a machine for electrical impulses like a TENS machine, and home exercises to get your spine back into true. The ligaments, tendons, and muscles will relax. This will stop a lot of the pain, if not all of it.
