Whether you are intending to hire a freelance photographer for personal or business reasons you need to know a few things about their work before decide on a final answer. Many people hire photographers for a whole host of reasons, from weddings and Bar mitzvahs to portraits and journalism. If you are intending to hire professional photographers in NYC think first about the reason you need them.

Do you want your photographer to take journalistic news shots, fashion shots, landscape shots, color, black and white or sepia? Do you want indoor or outdoor, studio or natural, digital or 35mm? The project you are working on would need a photographer who specializes in that type of photography, or a photographer who is naturally gifted and creative.

Where to Start Looking

Begin with finding a list of local professional photographers NYC area and choose a shortlist based on the type of work you want done. You can do this through Yellow Pages or asking family and friends if they know anyone. Once you have completed your list you may want to interview them and take a look at their portfolios. Most photographers will have their own website, which is technically the same as their portfolio, these days. You may prefer to select another short list based on what you see and how you feel about their work. Each photographer will have a different take on a subject and many will be creative. Others may have a more practical stance and some will use special effects and filters to obtain a different perspective on a shot.

Speak to them about their work and ask them the questions that you feel will make your shortlist shorter. You will need to reduce your list down to your final choice of photographer to get your job done.

Get their perspectives on the job you have in mind. You could benefit from showing them the brief for your job and ask how they would best tackle it. Once you have an idea of whom you think will do the best justice to your ideas you will be better placed to choose your ultimate photographer.

If needed, visit their studio and see how they work. You may want to watch them in action and view their operation as they deal with each job they do. It all depends what lengths you need to go to to choose the right professional photographer for you. Once you know what kind of work they do it will be much easier to assess which one is the most suitable.

When you finally make your decision you can talk to your new photographer and brief them on the rest of the job, and hopefully you will have a good set of pictures for your magazine, website or other project.
