Happy and Healthy Choices for Pool Sanitation

by | Mar 11, 2016 | Swimming Pools and Spas

Many pool owners opt for the ever-popular chlorine to keep their pool water clean. However, research is now showing that chlorine can be dangerous. Due to the chloramines in chlorine, many people experience painful side effects such as:

  • Red, burning eyes
  • Itchy, red skin
  • Brittle hair or hair loss
  • Acne
  • Some forms of cancer

In order to enjoy a safe swimming experience, pool owners are encouraged to look into alternatives to chlorine pools such as salt water, ozone, non-chlorine shock, bromine, and baquanide.

Salt Water

One alternative is to use salt water, which generates free chlorines through salt. By using salt, chloramines are avoided. For this reason, the free chlorines generated provide you with a safe way to keep your pool water clean.

Ozone

Ozone does not provide a complete alternative to chlorine either. However, like salt water, it does aid in creating a safer pool experience. When chlorine mixes with organic materials, chloramines are created. Ozone aids in the breakdown of these organic materials and therefore, creates less dangerous chloramine.

Non-Chlorine Shock (MPS)

Similar to ozone, MPS is a way to keep chloramine levels low while still using chlorine to aid in sanitization of the pool. MPS can oxidize organic materials, but cannot sanitize the pool on its own. However, this material is unnecessary for outdoor pools where the sun can naturally oxidize organics.

Bromine

While bromine is a safe chlorine alternative, it can be more costly than other alternatives, especially when it comes to outdoor pools. The chemical is unable to stabilize itself against UV rays and thus more chemical is needed to keep the pool safe.

Baquanide

Is a safe alternative to chlorine that takes less maintenance than chlorine. However, the longer pool owners use baquanide, the more problematic it seems to become. After cloudy water begins to appear, pool owners must drain and begin again.

Keeping Your Family Happy and Healthy in the Pool

Because of the negative side effects many people experience from chloramines, it is important to consider alternatives to chlorine pools. In order to ensure that your family will be happy and healthy in your pool, use a company such as Clearwater Pool Systems to help you make your sanitation decision.
