There are quite a few gyms on James Island, but almost none can boast of having a Starting Strength coach on staff. Starting Strength is an ingenious approach to barbell training that’s accessible to anyone at any fitness level. It gets results fast and helps everyday people become capable, strong lifters.
Starting Strength 101
“Starting Strength” is the title of a legendary 2005 bodybuilding tome by Mark Rippetoe. Rippetoe pulled from his extensive experience as a powerlifter and strength training coach as well as the experience of seasoned colleagues and sports scientists.
The result, “Starting Strength,” is a step-by-step guide on optimal techniques to use when training beginners. Specific types of Starting Strength programs differ between coaches, but a basic program includes a full body workout performed three times weekly, every other day, with one or two exercises alternating between workouts.
For example, workout days A and B might consist of squats, deadlifts and presses or bench presses, one of the final two exercises factoring into workouts A or B when performed over a week’s time in an ABA or BAB pattern.
Quick Gains at Any Age
The Starting Strength program progresses quickly, increasing loads on the muscle in each phase, with three or more phases spanning one to three weeks each. This is but the novice program. Intermediate and advanced programs follow similar formats, with case-by-case modifications for age, lifting experience and fitness goals.
