Can’t Take the Heat? Try High-Temperature Tape!

by | May 9, 2013 | Business

As the name suggests high temperature tapes can tolerate environments of extremely hot temperatures. The tape backing and adhesive system are specially designed to stay adhered to objects despite high temperatures without degrading or losing functionality.

Uses

High Temperature Tape have a variety of uses. They are often used in masking applications with an oven bake process or even flame-spray appications. They may also be used to reinforce or strengthen pipes or vents with substances of high heat passing through them. Alternatively it can provide a form of insulation.

Types of High Temperature Tape

There are several kinds of tape manufactured with varying degrees of heat resistance. The most commonly used tapes of this nature include:

  • High Temp Paper Masking Tapes
    • Similar to the general purpose masking tapes we’re used to, but specially formulated to handle high temperatures. Ideal when you paint process may include an oven bake cycle. There are a wide variety of products in this group that can withstand a varying array of temperatures.
  • Silicone Fiberglass Rubber coated tape
    • Silicone coated fiberglass fibers. Designed to protect wiring and electrical work from heat, flame, UV erosion, welding sparks and molten spatter.
  • PTFE Coated Fiberglass Tape
    • Teflon coated tape reinforced with fiberglass with an acrylic or silicone adhesive system. Includes a reasonable degree of moisture and chemical resistance. Commonly used in heat seal applications.
  • PTFE High Temperature and Chemical Resistant tape
    • Like normal PTFE tape with added resistance against corrosive chemicals.
  • Silicone Adhesive Fiberglass tape
    • Splash protection against welding, sparks and molten splatter. Silicone stops base from sticking to other surfaces.
  • Vinyl Masking tape
    • Features a vinyl backing with a rubber adhesive. Withstands lower temperatures of up to 149°C for up to 30 minutes. Breaks apart and pulls off easily. Commonly used by painters and on automotive body work.
  • Metal Foil tape
    • Most commonly comes in lead and aluminum form. Typically used in HVAC, electrical and industrial areas. Can conduct an electrical charge. Features extra-strength acrylic adhesive.
  • Additional tape types include Heating Tapes. These tapes primarily conduct heat and insulate surfaces. Handy for energy efficiency and cost savings and can help with freezing.
