The concept behind two sided tape is a no-brainer, and one that every child learned when folding over a piece of one-sided tape in order to make it sticky on both sides in order to make a homemade work of art, perhaps, more attractive. Using the same method to tape things to a stucco wall might be a similar memory of many adults from days long past. Two sided tape makes things simpler, more efficient, and has a wide array of applications depending on what kind of tape you are using and the purpose for which you have it at your disposal.
The uses and advantages of two sided tape are of course multitudinous, whether one is putting together arts and craft projects, scrap booking, using lingerie tape to hold garments in place, or using heavy-duty industrial tape to connect two surfaces together. While the applications are diverse, ranging from common home use to construction (sheeting, for example, is often temporarily held in place using industrial strength two sided tape), the technology behind pressure sensitive tape is relatively new in the history of the world.
The invention of pressure sensitive tape, that is, tape that has a sticky side (or in the case of two sided tape, two sticky sides) and that does not need heat, cold or any other application other than pressure to make it stick to other surfaces, occurred in 1945. Doctor Horace Day used a gauzy cloth backing and a rubber adhesive to create a sort of surgical tape that he used in his own practice. Other medical professionals borrowed the technique, but this kind of pressure sensitive tape didn’t seem to have much potential for other kinds of uses until much later.
Fifty years passed. In the 1920s, car manufacturers invented masking tape in order to perfect the art of spray painting cars. This was in an era when cars usually came in two colors (for example, white and blue), and to quickly create sharp edges the masking tape was applied to prevent one color leaking into the other. Masking tape is still used for similar purposes in a variety of industries.
Applications of pressure sensitive tape, however, languished for another thirty years until cellulose-based polymers were invented. These provided more efficient backing for adhesives, and in the 1950s, the Scotch Company put pressure sensitive adhesive tape on the market for household use. Things took off from there. Today there are thousands of different kinds of tape that can be purchased for multitudes of uses, many of them available with double adhesives – that is, sticky on both sides.
