Tungsten Pellets – Applications and the Process of Hardfacing

by | Oct 13, 2016 | Metals & Alloys

Tungsten carbide pellets are used in an array of applications including for building up oil field drill bits, hardbanding used and new drill pipe collars and steel substrate for various wear-resistance applications. These pellets are made from sintered tungsten carbide combined with a cobalt binder. The consistency of the pellet size provides for maximum pellet density, even wear and maximum sturdiness.

The extension of service life and efficiency of machine parts is the result of quality tungsten pellet hardfacing services. Tungsten pellets applied through hardfacing a surfacing significantly increase the toughness of that surface.

In order to see the maximum effectiveness of the hardfacing process with tungsten pellets, certain processes must be understood and applied properly. They include the following.

Surface Prep
Surface preparation is key when carrying out the hardfacing process, sometimes referred to as the hard resurfacing process. The preparation process involves proper pre-cleaning of the surface. All potential contaminants should be removed from the surface first, including rust, dirt, oil and grease. Only then will the surface be properly prepared to receive the welding process involved in hardfacing the part with tungsten pellets.

Wearing Process
The wear involved with the part is important to understand. Some machinery parts experience corrosion, abrasion, high compression loads, adhesive wear or high temperatures. These wear factors may determine the proper selection of the hardfacing product.

The Base Metal
The type of base metal that is receiving the hard resurfacing treatment will determine the type of hardfacing material to be used. Tungsten carbide provides a very tough surface to the the part receiving the welding process. Some of the metals that may work well with tungsten carbide include mold steel, steel with high strength and low alloy, carbon steels, cast iron and abrasion resistant steels. Certain metals work quite well when there are significant temperature changes involved or when either hot or cold environments are present.

By contacting a reputable dealer of tungsten carbide pellets, you may learn more about the most effective use of this form of tungsten carbide and receive insight on the ways in which this material can offer you significant benefits in your machinery and production operations.
