Starting out as a new business owner can be expensive and overwhelming. There are many things to think about as you build out your space and set up shop. It is very tempting to try and go with the cheapest route on everything, but it isn’t always wise. Instead, to think about adding features that will save you money over the long haul, even if these cost a bit more up front.
One of the things you should consider is how to conserve water. Not only will starting your business with water conservation in mind save you money, but it will also help to protect one of our most endangered resources.
Many areas of the country suffer from drought. In California, for example, drought has been ongoing for years, causing water conservation to be mandated. It pays to be prepared to save water, even if your business is not currently located in a drought situation.
What Can I Do?
Install water saving toilets and waterless urinals. Water saving toilets use somewhere between 1.2 gallons per flush and 1.6 gallons, and cost about the same as conventional toilets. Waterless urinals use no water, and require less plumbing, so you save money on installation and maintenance of pipes, too. Water saving toilets and waterless urinals will go a long way.
Choose motion sensor, timed faucets – These faucets turn on automatically when the user moves their hand underneath, and then turn off after 10 seconds of water flow. These can reduce water usage in your bathroom in two ways. The first is that these faucets have a lower flow of water when in use. In addition, the automatic shut off reduces the amount of time the water runs. These faucets are also more hygienic because users do not touch these.
Setting your business up efficiently from the beginning is much easier than having to implement water saving devices and process later. With a little thought and well-planned purchases like automatic shut off water valves and water saving toilets, you’ll be well on your way to being one of the most water efficient businesses in your area.
